She desires to help young people have hands-on creative experiences and she’s making that happen in her neighborhood. Designed for children ages 6-17, the free monthly Saturday programs run noon to 2 p.m. at the Covington Library in Decatur, and this summer have involved such subjects as making tapestries, designing buildings and on July 8 the focus was “Create Life Size Summertime Treats.” At the July program, children were shown how to create larger-than-life ice cream cones and watermelons out of various materials, said Newland. “I try to make it so its hands on and not just sitting and watching someone perform something,” she said. Participants often take creations home with them. Registration is required to participate in Art in the Neighborhood. Go to dekalblibrary.org/events to register."
