All SMS students are required to read at least 3 books this summer, one of which everyone will read. Reading logs and question answers should be returned in August 2023. 6th Grade Selection: Wonder by Palacio 7th Grade Selection: The Skin I'm In by Flake 8th Grade Selection: Monster by Myers All of the above titles are available through DeKalb County Public Library, either as print, ebooks, or audiobooks. The first two are also available in SORA, DCSD's ebook collection, available through Clever. (It's the icon with the little blue man with red shoes.) Used and new copies are also available through Amazon, Powell's Books, Barnes & Noble, and other book sellers. Tip: Consider participating in DeKalb County Public Library's (DCPL) summer reading program. You can read books for SMS that will at the same time count for points and prizes at DCPL. Community NewsJuneteenth, now a national holiday, is Monday, June 19. The festivities for the national holiday have already begun in some areas and here in Georgia, locals can join in the celebration, which commemorates the day in 1865 when slavery officially ended in the United States. Centennial Olympic Park, 265 Park Ave., will host the Juneteenth Atlanta Parade and Music Festival. There will be live- cultural music, beautiful hand-made merchandise, fun activities, and much more.
